Gothenburg located in the heart of Scandinavia is a perfect mix of a big city and a small town. Gothenburg is a city that keeps on growing organically, so sometimes it gets confusing when you visit after a few months and there are lines of new restaurants. In the last decade, the city’s food scene has begun attracting attention globally. So in this article, let me tell you some of my favorite and the best restaurants in Gothenburg.
Koka
If you are looking for a perfect place to impress your date, Koka is the place for you. The place offers plenty of new flavors and combinations of traditional and western cuisines. The aesthetic of the restaurant is like that of a royal castle with timber floors and red-hued walls. The presentation of the menu was the best part as it came inside a box along with cutlery.
You must not forget to try the smoked celeriac which was the highlight of our night. The staff was extremely friendly and the service was quick as well. Also, the restaurant was awarded with a Michelin star and should be a must-visit for wine lovers.

La Strega
This is a place that you will want to visit every week. La Strega has that perfect old rustic vibe that can also be felt in their food. The place specializes in locally produced, seasonal ingredients and organic wines. Talking about wines, it is priced and served by the glass making it light in on the pocket as well.
We were extremely pleased with the service and their food suggestions. The portion size was also appropriate according to the price. Even the chef was visiting the tables to make sure everything was satisfactory. Overall, a 10/10 experience.

Bhoga
Bhoga is a fine dining restaurant that has held a Michelin Star since 2014 and is one of the best restaurants in Gothenburg. The restaurant takes pride in serving organically produced wines that are sourced from only small farmers. With meals of up to 9 courses, you can feel the taste of authentic Scandinavian ingredients.
Another fun thing to make note of is that they offer prepped meals for the ones who like to cook themselves.
The dishes were amazing and delicate with great wine pairing. With lots of attention to detail, the restaurant has an excellent alcohol-free drink menu for those A really interesting experience with friendly and quick service.

Moon Thai Kitchen
Moon Thai Kitchen like its exclusive name is an exclusive restaurant that is located in the heart of Gothenburg. The restaurant specializes in classic Thai cuisine and hand-crafted cocktails. It offers a beach-like atmosphere with a tropical-themed interior. It is a popular place among the locals and tourists.
You have the option of dining in a tuk-tuk or a van instead of the regular cubicles. We felt the food was quite expensive according to the portion size but was worth the price if talking about just the taste. The service was decent as well.

Heaven 23
If you like to dine with a view then you can witness the entire city from Heaven 23. The 23 in its name stands for the 23rd floor where this restaurant is situated. It is one of the top-rated restaurants in the city and is very spacious so it does not feel crowded. It was completely obvious that Heaven 23 would make our list of best restaurants in Gothenburg.
We ordered their special of the day which was a white fish called hake with creamed cauliflower and potatoes. It is safe to say that it tasted “heavenly”. You must visit there once whether it is to experience their picture-perfect views or their amazing food.

Human
In our opinion, Human is Gothenburg’s own high-end restaurant is named as one of the top and best restaurants in Gothenburg. Each dish on their 10-course meal was bursting with authentic flavor and texture. You could feel the trained hands of the chef in those dishes. The staff is also very welcoming and friendly.
Martin Moses who is the creator of these impeccable dishes is a very gracious host. Through the open kitchen, you can witness the reason why he is called the MasterChef. It is a great choice for lunch or dinner and is awarded as a preferred business lunch restaurant. Human is a rising star and gives off a very personal and familiar vibe making the customers visit regularly.

Da Matteo
The next place on the list is not a restaurant but a cafe. I know this is supposed to be about “best restaurants in Gothenburg”, but I could not help but include this classic cafe in this list. We visited this place twice in one week just to have their specialty coffee. The espresso has that amazing burnt-roasted bean flavor. After just the first sip you will feel the authenticity of the coffee.
The food variety here is a bit limited but still all that is available is top-notch. The cafe gives off an old-school vibe with exposed red bricks and minimal interiors. The coffee blends are made according to the season with their pumpkin spice being extremely popular among the locals during the Halloween season.

Spike Brewery
Gothenburg is the Swedish capital of craft beer as it harbors over 50 brewers in just one city. It is very popular among beer enthusiasts across the country and beyond. The city is known for its extremely adapting culture as you will find no feeling of competition of among the sellers. Rather you will see a mutual understanding where they cheer each other on to invent new flavors.
At Spike Brewery you will find a lively scene with local bands playing and pop-up exhibitions by small business owners gracing the grounds. We spent an entire day drinking and tasting different beers and the host, David was ever so gracious. If you visit, you must try their lime sour and vanilla coffee sides.

Upper House Dining
Situated on the 16th floor, this restaurant offers breathtaking views from its dining room. The dishes are served as six-course meals which are prepared by trained and creative chefs. Locally sourced seasonal ingredients are used to make these dishes. These servings offer a mix of traditional and modern cuisines to the customer.
Considering, that it was very crowded when we visited, the staff still took their time to listen intently and made sure that every customer had their own customized order without any errors. The price is a little on the higher side but it is definitely worth it as the portion size and the scenery of Gothenburg from the top are both equally good.

Hoze Sushiya
Hoze is an exclusive sushi restaurant located in Gothenburg. The best thing about it is that it is run by a father-son duo who handle the whole process from making the dishes to serving them by themselves. There is a very cute dog who greets the customers and guards the door. The cook is very well trained and visits Japan regularly to learn new techniques and improve the ones he already has.
Talking about the restaurant itself then it is very small but that is what makes you feel like being at home. Booking in advance is a good option. It has a traditional dining concept with only six seats at the counter. Do not worry if you have any allergies or something because each dish is customized specifically for you.

Tacos and Tequila
By now, you must have figured that Gothenburg has something for all. From authentic Swedish cuisines to Mexican. As you can expect, this taco joint has a laid-back atmosphere with live music and people hollering for more margaritas. The food is extremely delicious and fresh.
We tried the spicy tuna ceviche and their soft shell taco with chipotle salsa. Oh! And do not forget to try their corn chips and guacamole which come as sharing bowls. There are many different kinds of toppings to choose from. Overall, it was an experience to relish as we had a full meal at a very affordable price.

Noot Nordik Kitchen
Noot Nordik Kitchen is an authentic Scandinavian restaurant with its own features that make it separate from its competitors. We visited this place at their peak hours where we had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. But it is safe to say that the food was worth the wait.
We tried their exclusive catfish, and game meatballs among other things. With each bite, flavors were bursting into the mouth.
The staff was quite attentive and friendly. They were even kind enough to educate us about their traditions and the dishes while catering to drinks. The restaurant is decorated in a minimalist style with light-washed wood and tropical plants. All in all, it was a huge pleasure to dine here and would definitely recommend it.

Barabicu
This restaurant has both rooftop seating as well as indoors. One can enjoy pan-american cuisine while soaking in the winter sun. Their indoor seating area consists of booths where one can have some privacy while eating. The staff is very welcoming and considerate.
You can find everything here, from the quality of the fish to the freshness of the bread, everything is top-tier. Their dishes come with big portion sizes which is highly uncommon in restaurants of this stature. After tasting the food here, you will have a whole new perspective on American cuisine.

Tavolo
At Tavolo, you can devour Italian cuisine. This restaurant is located in a building that was formerly an artillery stable. They tried to preserve the original aesthetic and only added a few new things to the interior. Just at the entrance, you will find stunning paintings that are abstract and a huge 6899 kg sculpture of a horse head.
The whole restaurant gives off a very downtown New York City vibe with something for all on their menu. Coming to food, it is delicious and is priced decently according to the Sweden currency. The portion size is great as well where each dish can be shared among two very easily.
